Prelim Task

Here we have our prelim task that we have filmed following the guidelines from the spec, although rather than having someone walk into a room, we have had someone walk out of a building. There was not a free room available at the time we were asked to film this, only a very small office that was too cramped to let us film properly. We hope this will be acceptable because the main point of the prelim task seems to be to film using techniques that are the most useful to the filming of an opening sequence. We know that we will be comparing this task to our final coursework and therefore will be analysing it in detail for the evaluation section. However, we have noted a few brief points below:

Alice

It would be hard to cross the line outside in this wide space, but we might have done it in the small office by accident. We have generally managed match on action quite well, but Alice fiddling with her hands was a bad idea as it made continuity much more likely to go wrong. Dialogue is difficult outside as there is so much background sound.

  1. From re-watching our preliminary task a few times, it became apparent that there were several main issues; first of all, the cuts in the match on action shot were not as accurate as they could have been, some did not match which effected the continuity. Secondly, there were one or two double takes in the dialogue; repeats of certain words or phrases occurred which defeated the aim of shot/reverse shot. Lastly, the ambient sound of the school made the dialogue difficult to understand, even when the rest of the school were still in lessons. The main problem with this task was the editing however, the filming itself was more or less precise, excluding one camera jolt. For the actual coursework these factors will need to be considered in more detail to ensure these issues do not occur again.

  2. When we do our coursework we will have to overcome the mistakes which we made in this task, such as the changes the in the ambient sound. Also we will have to make sure the dialogues can be heard clearly.

  3. Points for Improvement:
When watching back our prelim task it became apparent that there were a few things that could be improved in the future and certain elements that we need to consider when making out opening sequence.

One of the things that could be improved is the overall continuity of the placement of the actors/actresses. There were some flaws in the continuity in terms of the stance of the actors and the placement of their hands and heads. For example in one shot hands were placed on the table and in another they had disappeared. When coming to the final task things like that will need to be perfected to make sure the match on action we are going to include will be fluent.

Another thing that needs to be improved is the quality of the sound. When filming outside it can be hard for the camera to pick up dialogue meaning it can be hard to hear what is going on. We attempted to try and overcome this in our two shot where 'Ruby' (Alice) greets her brother (Harry) as that dialogue was picked up the quietest; we cut sound from one of the shot/reverse shot to be played over the top of her speaking. This worked, but in future to improve the overall sound quality further, recording the conversation on a device at time of film or dubbing in sound afterwards would work better, and this is something we should do for our opening two minutes.

We also need to make sure that there are no gaps in between takes in the editing process, so that when shots are cut together there is no black space.

  4. After reviewing our preliminary task, I inferred that there are some dialogues which are not in sync, this was done during editing the sequence, so we will have to be more careful next time.

Also, the ambient sound makes it hard for the audience to clearly hear the dialogue, to overcome this problem we should choose a location which has low ambient sound to film in.

On the other hand, the actors could keep a phone in a pocket or hidden somewhere, which could be used to record the dialogues at the same time as the camera. This should reduce the ambient sound.
